Q1.  What is the main focus of Samskritam Classes

Accepted Answer

The main focus is to enable students to achieve proficiency in "spoken" Samskritam and to uphold the great ancient culture through spreading the usage of Samskritam language.  While in the first year itself the student can begin speaking simple sentences and make conversation, as the student continues to advance he/she will be able to learn more complex grammatical  rules and usages.

Q2.  I have no prior exposure to Indian languages. Will I be able to learn Samskritam?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely!!.  Our teaching method is structured such that no prior Indian language exposure is necessary.  In fact we have many students who are of non-Indian origin and have performed excellently as Samskritam.

Q3.  Why do we need to register an adult along with the child?

Accepted Answer

There are two reasons for this requirement. (a) The secret to mastering any new language is to keep speaking with others  The more you speak the better you get.  By having an adult also learn Samskritam along with their child(ren) enables them to practice speaking at home and also motivates the child.  In our experience this technique helped the children tremendously.  (b) Safety - The school, where the classes are conducted, requires that no child is left unattended by an adult. Samskrita Bharati teachers are all volunteers they cannot take responsibility of child's safety and needs one of the parents stay on premises during their class

Q4.  I see only Levels 1 through 5 for adult classes, but not for children.  Do all children go to same class?"

Accepted Answer

No.  The children's classes  are divided based on age-group and number years of prior learning.

Q5.  Do we need to know the Samskritam script (lipi) prior to registration?

Accepted Answer

No!.  you need not have prior knowledge of Samskritam lipi prior to registration for classes.  However, for learning any language it is important to know script as well.  We offer separate lipi classes for any student free of charge when you register for the regular adult class.  Please Note:  The lipi classes are for adults only and for students in Level-1 and Level-2.  For higher level students we expect they would have already mastered the lipi.  For children  lipi is part of their curriculum

Q6.  Can I include my friend's an/or other family children as part of my registration

Accepted Answer

This is very common question.  During your childhood school years you may have studied Samskritam as part of your language options.  Without knowing your current proficiency we will not be able to assess which level you would fit in.  So if this is your first time with Samskrita Bharati, we recommend you to register for Level 1 first.  After attending couple of classes if you feel that you are ready for the next level you can discuss that with the instructor and go to the next level.

Q7.  Can we take credit for Foreign Language classes for Fairfax County and/or Loudon County  Public Schools?

Accepted Answer

Fairfax County Public Schools recognize the Samskritam As Foreign Language (SAFL).  But we are still waiting for Loudon County's decision to include SAFL.  Many parents in Loundon County have putting pressure on LCPS to recognize SAFL.

Q8.  Do you conduct SAFL Classes separately?

Accepted Answer

No. There are no specific classes we conduct here at the VA Samskrita Kendram.  SAFL Students learn samskritam through Distance Learning Program (DLP) which is an online course.  However, for prospective SAFL students, one of our senior  teachers do provide some guidance on how to prepare for exams etc.  And of course if any SAFL Student wants some additional help, our dedicated teachers are always there to help!!
